When CalArts celebrated its 50th anniversary, we crafted a commemorative edition of their alumnx magazine. This edition, which we titled “CalArts: Based on a True Story,” aimed to resonate with each generation of CalArtians. We seized upon the rich tapestry of mythical tales and nostalgic recollections woven into CalArts’ lore. Pairing articles with personal anecdotes, we sought to evoke both futurism and nostalgia.

Embracing CalArts’ pedagogical ethos of challenging and reshaping conventional structures, we used graphic treatments growing exuberantly from the typographic grid, photographs, gutter, margins, and pagination, composing a vibrant, hypersensorial portrait of a community defined by its embrace of experimentation.
