Building as Ever
Building as Ever

Building as Ever is a catalogue for the Orange County Museum of Art's 2017 California-Pacific Triennial. Our design approach was inspired by Curator Cassandra Coblentz’s central provocation: that architecture is not fixed, but fluid and always in the process of becoming.

The catalogue’s structure, in flux, is anchored by a vertical format and a palette drawn from construction materials. The design toggles clarity and complexity. Two typefaces are set in dialogue: one rational and geometric, the other expressive and textured. A modular grid underpins the layout but is constantly reinterpreted; stacked, fractured, or softened to reflect the voice and rhythm of each essay or contributor. Text and image are treated as equal materials, wrapping, insetting, and reconfiguring across the page. Essays are shaped by their authors’ voices, with text behaving like material: carving space, shifting weight, and generating form.
