Palm Springs Art Museum Residency

Handbuilt was invited to serve as artist-in-residence at the Palm Springs Art Museum. At the time, the presidential election had shed light on an accentuating divide between people from different parties, even within close-knit communities or families. As a new administration was preparing to take office, we proposed examining what we all had in common. For four weekends, we invited visitors of all ages to contribute to a collective gallery-sized calendar. Visitors each chose a page to respond to our prompts: What do you cherish? What is truly worth your time? What do we have in common?

Through a design-based process involving collaging and press printing, we connected with citizens and makers of all ages. Their ideas about togetherness and what they value amazed us with their exuberance and thoughtfulness. The filled-up calendar became a communal source of inspiration to remain in the present moment, together, and look forward.
