Zoe Crosher: The Reconsidered Archive of Michelle duBois
This project involved designing 4 books for The Reconsidered Archive of Michelle duBois, an ongoing body of work by Zoe Crosher. The archive is composed of thousands of analog photographs taken by Michelle duBois, a self-portraitist active in the 1970s and ’80s. Our design approach focused on creating a clean, modular structure that could hold a large volume of conflicting material without imposing a fixed narrative. We used analog photographic formats (Polaroid, 4x5", 35mm, etc.) as a loose organizing system, allowing the technology itself to suggest a kind of historical scaffolding. The layout is restrained and consistent, providing contrast to the unruly, layered nature of the archive. The goal was not to resolve Michelle duBois’s identity, but to make space for her multiplicity—supporting the idea of an incomplete index of a life lived in performance.
